Frequently asked questions

Straight answers about booking an electrician in York with Hour Electric.

How much does an electrician cost in York?

Hour Electric uses simple hourly booking pricing. A one-hour visit is £89, shown before you book and charged after the visit. If the work needs it and your electrician has availability, each additional 30 minutes is £35, agreed with you on the day. Materials are charged separately where required.

When do I pay?

After the visit. You add a card when you book so the appointment is confirmed, but nothing is charged until your electrician has been. The visit, plus any extra time or materials you agreed on the day, is then taken from that card.

Will an electrician come out for one small job?

Yes. Hour Electric is designed specifically for small domestic electrical jobs, from a single damaged socket to a light fitting you’ve been meaning to get changed.

Can I give the electrician several jobs?

Yes. Add everything you’d like looked at when you book. Your electrician will work through the list in the order you set during your booked time.

What can be completed in an hour?

It depends on the complexity of each job, access, the condition of the existing installation and whether materials are to hand. Straightforward jobs like replacing a socket or fitting a light often take well under an hour. We can’t guarantee a set number of jobs, but we will work efficiently through your list and tell you if more time is needed.

Are materials included?

No. Materials are charged separately where required. Your electrician will confirm any additional cost with you before fitting parts.

Can I supply my own light fitting?

Generally yes, provided it is suitable for the location and can be installed safely. If a fitting you’ve bought isn’t suitable, your electrician will explain why and talk through the options.

What if the electrician needs longer?

If the work is taking longer than the booked time, your electrician will explain the options. That may mean adding extra time on the day where availability allows, or arranging a separate quotation for larger work. Nothing extra is carried out without your agreement.

Do I need to know what the fault is?

No. Just describe what is happening, for example “the kitchen sockets stopped working yesterday” or “the lights flicker when the shower is on”. Your electrician will take it from there.

How far in advance do I need to book?

At least 48 hours before your arrival window, so we can confirm which electrician is coming and let you know. You can book up to two months ahead. If something is urgent, call us and we’ll see what we can do on the day.

Do you offer evening appointments?

Yes, where available. Evening windows run from 17:00 to 20:00 and can be selected when booking, subject to availability on your chosen date.

What areas of York do you cover?

Hour Electric covers York and selected surrounding areas, including Acomb, Clifton, Heworth, Fulford, Haxby and Dringhouses. See our areas we cover page, and enter your postcode when booking to check availability in your area.

What if I need to cancel or move my booking?

You can cancel or move your visit free of charge until 6pm the day before. After that a late cancellation is £35, and if your electrician arrives and can’t get in the charge is £45. Both are taken from the card saved when you booked. If we have to cancel, you pay nothing and we’ll give you £10 off the rebooked visit.

Can landlords use Hour Electric?

Yes. Landlords and letting agents can book a visit for tenant-reported faults, accessory replacement and small maintenance lists at a rental property in York.
